Philadelphia, Penna.

Dear Mr. Carlen:

I am writing a thesis under the direction of Dr. Meyer Schapiro of Colubia University, on American Negro Art, and giving particular attention to Horace Pippen and his themes as a negro. I am also interested in knowing of other contemporary popular negro painters.

I would appreciate it if you could give me any pertinent information. Also, I would like to obtain photographs of Pippen's work that deals particularly with negro themes that do not appear in Mr. Rodman's book, such as Portrait of Marian Anderson, Prejudice or any other posters.

Could you possibly send me photos or direct me to a source? I will be happy to cover all costs.

Sincerely yours,
