War Department, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, Washington, Sept 10th 1866. Sir, I must respectfully ask for an appointment, as clerk in your department. I have served in the army. Having entered as 2nd Lieut Aug 10th 1862 and was honorably discharged the service July 7th 1865 as Captain 25th N.Y. Vol. Cavalry. Since, I have been brevetted Major for gallant and meritorious services. I would also call your attention to enclosed letter from Hon. J.S.
