Major General O.O. Howard
Chief of Freedman's Bureau &c. &c. &c.

General,
I have the honor to apply for a temporary position in the Freedman's Bureau.

I entered the Volunteer U.S. service as First Lieutenant of Co. "O" 198th Regt Penna. Infy Vols. at the organization of that regiment, and served with it, in the Army of the Potomac, until the end of February 1865, when I received a commission as First Lieutenant 8th U.S.C.H.A., having previously passed Maj Gen Casey's Examining Board. I joined the 8th U.S.C.H.A. for duty March 10th 1865, and remained with that regiment until April 1866, when it was mustered out of service.
I have the honor to enclose copies of letters of recommendation, from various of my commanding officers, the originals being on file at the A.G.O. War Department, & hoping that my application may meet with a favorable consideration

I am Sir, very Respectfully,
Your obedient Servant,
J.W. Hannay.
