Brunswick March 27 1866
It gives me pleasure to bear witness to the good character & faithful services of Mr John W Hannay late First Lieutenant in the 198th Regt Penna. Vols. The Regt. to which Mr Hannay was attached was under my command during the whole period of its service, and I had frequent opportunity to witness the conduct of its officers.
I formed the most favorable opinion of the character, capacity, and worthiness of this gentleman and cordially commend him to any who may have it in their power to promote his desire to obtain a commission in the Regular Army of the United States
