0475 Executive Office Jackson Miss, Sept 19th, 1866 Genl, I am directed by His Excellency the Governor of Mississippi to inform you that your communication of the 8th inst in reference to the reported ill treatment of a teacher of a Freedmen's School at Canton, was referred to Colonel S.S. Calhoun Dist Attorney 5th Judicial District "for his information with a request that the good citizens see that the teacher be protected in all his peaceful pursuits;" and that Col. Calhoun has returned the same with the following endorsement: - "Canton Miss, Sept 18th 1866: - Respectfully ret'd. I am satisfied that any representations which may have been made on this subject set forth within are false.
