Dr. Sir-
In reply to your letter of the 17th inst. requesting me "to furnish a statement of what I know in regard to the riot which took place at the Camp meeting at Shipley's woods, near Hanover Switch, Ann Arundel Co. Md. on Thursday Aug. 30th 1866", I would state- 
That I was at the Camp meeting above mentioned and in company with some friends went to the colored peoples prayer meeting in the afternoon, and noticed several white persons intruding upon the blacks, and trying to interrupt them by mocking and imitating them in their religious exercises and devotions.
I asked one of the Colored men - why he did not apply to the managers to protect them ? and directed him to the Rev. Dr. Lanahan, whom I met afterwards in company with the same Col'd Man, as I was leaving the Col'd Camp.
About eleven o'clock at night I again visited the Col'd peoples meeting, and found both Whites and Blacks very much
