Baltimore, Md. Sept. 22/ 66

I was on the Camp Ground at Shipley woods on Thursday Aug. 30, 1866. Sometime before midnight I was with a young lady at the Alter on the left hand side of the pulpit - I heard a noise in front of me, and went down to see what was going on - I saw a crowd of white men and crowd of negroes - both parties seemed to be getting ready to have a fight, I then left that place and went up to the head of the seats - I had been there about 20 minutes when I heard the firing commence, do not know who commenced the firing, but distinctly heard the balls passing over my head and around me - from any position the bullets which passed over me must have been fired by the colored persons. I myself did not see any firing. After the firing was over, I saw the white men rally with clubs. Did not know any one engaged in the riot. This is all I know about the riot.
