This is to certify that I was on the Camp Ground at Shipleys Wood on the day and evening of the riot. At about ten o'clock at night, I was at the Colored Camp and found the negroes praying and singing, and quite a number of hard looking white men standing near. I heard these same white men frequently call out to the negroes, stop your dam praying and give us a tune - this was frequently repeated and whilst I was there not one word was given in reply by the negroes. These same white men were armed with pistols and clubs, had it not been for the Ladies that I had on the ground, I should have remained longer, but deeming it best for them, I left the ground about eleven oclock. When I drove from the ground a stone was thrown into the wagon by some whites standing on the side road, and I understood the stone was intended for one.

I was told by a man - whom I do not know - before I left the ground that these white men intended to attack the negroes, and that there would be hot work that night.

Very Respectfully
James C. Adams
