him (naming his number) he would take the lead of them and would kill or clean out every damn nigger that was on the ground - or words to that effect. I then asked Shipley if he knew this man - he told his name but I do not remember it. The next person I saw and know was Andrew Harmon, to whom I said if you know any of those parties try and get them to leave the ground - which he was doing - to the best of my judgement, when I left and went to my carriage, while I was at the carriage the shooting commenced. Shortly after the firing had stopped, I heard one large man standing on the side of the road urging the people to get on their horses and go home and get their guns. I did not see who commenced the firing.
This crowd of white persons that I saw near the colored peoples tents were not in my opinion connected with the Camp meeting- they were using very profane language and were very noisy.
When I first arrived at the colored peoples camp, I noticed that they had guards out around their meeting, some of whom had clubs in their hands.
