Milton Benson
Ann Arundel Co

states that "I was kneeling at the alter, at the Camp Meeting in Shipleys woods about 12 o'clock on the night of August 30th 1866, when the riot commenced, and got out of the alter as soon as I heard the firing when I had gone 20, or 25 yds I was shot. I suppose the shot was fired by the colored people as it came from the direction in which they were approaching, but cannot say positively, I do not know who commenced the firing, When I left the alter my back was towards the direction in which the colored people were approaching. The shot struck me in the side of the neck rather in the rear, and came out of my mouth. I did not see any one either white or black firing or creating a disturbance, as I ran away as fast possible.
