I asked who it was that struck them. They replied that they intended to kill the Negro that [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] struck them.

I again asked them what Colored man it was that struck them, and told them that if they would tell me who it was, that struck them, I would order the arrest of that person.

They said no Sir, we are capable of attending to our own business, and would kill the Negroes.

I then told them I was an officer - a Justice of the Peace, and a Manager of the Camp Ground, and would not permit any disorderly conduct from any one. They told me that if I justified the Negroes in striking them, I was no better than a Nigger myself.

Then I called for assistance, but the swearing and loud talk of the Crowd, and the singing and praying of both Whites and Colored I (then standing between the two meetings) could not be heard,
