the tent. When the whites came back the second time, I hid in the Swamp. Stayed in the marsh until daylight then went to the Camp. When I got to the Camp and to my tent found that every thing I had there consisting of tables, furniture, kettles & pans, bedding &c. was all destroyed. Feather bed ripped open; every thing I had to eat in the tent was either stolen or destroyed - I lost 15 or 20 dollars. Between 8 & 9 o'clock the next morning I heard Jno. Janney acknowledge he opened Eliza Broughtons trunk.

Dennis Broughton (Col.) says
I was at the camp meeting at Shipley Woods when the trouble first commenced. I was asleep in the tent after dark about 10 or 11 oclock some woman came and woke me up. I got up and went to the front of the tent to see what was the matter. the first thing I saw was something throwed from the white people among the colored people. then the whites started to run. then I heard a pistol fired off by the white people. then the colored people fired. then I left. I had thirty dollars and my cloths in a large trunk in my sisters tent. the trunk was broken up after I left and the money taken. I don't know who took my money.
