with the exception of land on the White and Black Rivers, it is Upland. but rich soil and capable of raising 16 to 20 Bushels of wheat to the acre, Corn 40 to 50 Bushels, it is a fine fruit country and the grape is a natural production; from 800 to 1200 lbs of seed cotton can be raised to the acre, and is as healthy a country as there is in the US.
These Counties are accessible by navigation by White and Black Rivers during high water. On all the creeks and bayous there is good bottom land in small tracts. The most of this has been selected as Swamp Land. Act 28th Sept 1850 as a large portion of the lands selected and marked on the plats of this office has never been confirmed. I would deem it advisable to recommend some action in regard to this matter so as to have said land thrown in the market as by this means, Fine bottom lands would offer great inducements for settlement. For as it now stands the Govt or State cannot dispose of it.
