Offered the opportunity to aid in the work. 
The resident clergyman of this City has taken action in the matter and intends to open a School for the education of colored children,- and other influential citizens have expressed their desire to see the Freedmen educated and are willing to work in the matter. 
One Society, the United Presbyterians, have nearly completed a large School house in this City, and have sent teachers who are now awaiting it's completion; this building was commenced some months since.- They hope to be ready to commence their labors the latter part of October or 1st of November at farthest.  
I am satisfied that it may be postulated as an axiom, that three millions of people, degraded by a former State of Slavery, and it's necessary consequence - present ignorance, - have never been educated, improved, and elevated by the actions of isolated, charitable associations and societies remote from the field of operations.
