Beaufort Ga 23rd Jany 1869

To Whom it may Concern

This is to certify that the two bags of cotton that were recently taken by the Sheriff of Beaufort County from the premises recently occupied by me in Beaufort were delivered to the possession of Capt. J.E. Lewis Sub. Asst. Com. Bureau R.F. & A.L. on the 2nd day of December 1868 upon his demand for the same and to be applied by him in part payment of the Bond due from me to said Bureau or the U.S. Govt. 

That it was afterward placed in store by said Lewis' order on the premises where said Sheriff found it on agreement that said Lewis should hold it awaiting the decision of the Asst. Com. for So Carolina upon my application for relief from the lien hield by the Govt and for extension of time of payment of said bond, said cotton has been in the possession of & under the control of the officers of the U.S. Govt & not of myself up to the time of its seizure by said Sheriff
