Rochester Mch. 29, 1867
Maj. Gen. O. O. Howard
Dear Sir:
I have the honor to request an appointment under your charge.
I made application to you once in company with my father Frederick Douglass for a position as clerk, you could not at that time give me such position, but told me to wait awhile and there might be a chance for me.
I see by the papers that you require agents to accompany freedmen that have been employed to different parties, to their destination, and if so I might be of service in that capacity, or in any other you might be pleased to give me.
             Hoping for a favorable reply,
I have the honor to be,
                  Very respectfully,
                   Your obdt. Servant
                     Charles R. Douglass
