The attempt was again made by an order delivered by Mr. Metcalf in person and the greatest indignities were heaped upon him by Jos. Berry and family - who insulted him defied and abused the government and threatened Mr Metcalf with personal violence

I therefore request military assistance - and wish authority for the arrest of James Berry and of his son against whom I will prefer charges to the end that they may be tried by a military commission

My order to Mr Berry and the accompanying
instructions to Mr. Metcalfe you will find enclosed. Also the report of Mr. Metcalf in the case.

Should troops be sent I wish permission to retain them in my subdistrict until the first day of February 1868. I deem a squad of ten men necessary to ensure success in the business.
