of fifty men. I failed to find any immediate or definite cause of alarm, the Dr stating that his fears were grounded wholly upon what he had heard from apparently reliable sources, as the residents in that vicinity are represented as being friendly to the Institutions at Lauderdale.

I inspected the condition of the Quartermasters and Commissary Dept's at that Post and as far as I was enabled to learn found every thing connected therewith in good condition, and the business of the office conducted properly and promptly, with due regard to the interests of the service.

I found Mr. Wales, the author of the communications referred to me, still at Lauderdale, but not in charge of the Orphan Asylum, he having been relieved by the Society, and succeeded by Mr. Read.  I questioned him relative to the contents of the letters, but found that he had no specific
