him, it would be from the belief that he was loyal. I know that he was not a "persistent" loyal man; but, knew him to be a blind follower of A. H. Stevens; and there is not a greater foe to Republican government, in the country than Stevens. I knew that the colored people did not like him, for many reasons which I will give if required. I knew that men like you would appoint the right kind of men, if properly recommended.

I did not like to ask you for the appointment, so I got my friends to make an effort for me. I have done a great deal for the colored people without compensation.

Have had all I could do since I have been in Georgia, and have received but a trifle for my services. Nine tenths who come to me to get their business done, I do not pretend to ask them to pay me, and the result is I have expended all I had saved in the Army; hence, I made, what I thought, an honorable effort to get a position where I could do good, and earn a livelihood by it.
