Maj Gen'l O. O. Howard,
Comr Bureau R.F. and AL.
Washington D.C.

General.
I trust you will not consider it an impropriety in my addressing you directly, regarding a detail for duty in the Bureau.

I am in receipt of your letter of the 2nd inst, addressed to Hon J. D. Defress M.C. who has forwarded it to me, wherein you offer to grant my request to apply for a detail "to go to Georgia," if I desire it.

I do desire it. It would give me great satisfaction to resume my labors among the Freedmen. [[strikethrough]] My [[/strikethrough]] An official position would enable me to do more for them than I was able to accomplish, as a Clerk at Fort Monroe, and I hope I may soon be ordered to report to you.

I am
Very respectfully
Your Obt Servant
Douglas G. Risley
