I thank you so much for that letter and all of its precious contents, I cannot tell you how dear is that little lock of hair, it speaks so eloquently of our severed friendship. Four weeks ago I sat by him and talked to him. He said "Perhaps we will never meet again in this life but we will meet in Heaven. I want to thank you for your kindness to me!" Will I ever forget it! O no! And now the rolling tide of Death is between us. It seems almost as if it has been a lifetime.

Do you know that if I had been in Baltimore, I would not have been of any comfort to any one, unless mingling my tears with yours would have helped us both.
