Bain Hope. | Goldsboro N.C. Aug 23" 1866. Complains that a freedman named Needham Everett was punished with 39 lashes for taking up a stray hog although he gave it up as soon as it was claimed by the owner. Has written before complaining of dereliction of the Freedmen's Bureau but nothing came of it. States that "if steps are not taken to punish the offenders he will publish to the world the abuse of the power of the Freedmen's Bureau. | Aug 24" 1866. Respectfully referred to Asst. Com'r of N.C. for investigation and report (sd) S. Thomas. Sept 8" 1866. Rec'd back with report of Major Stickney. In every respect the statement is in falsehood. Everett never made known to me of his case coming before the Court. Everett employed Mr. Strong one of the best attornies. The Jury appeared intelligent, personally known to me, sat alongside of Mr. Strong, he examined & cross examined the witnesses the evidence against him showed him not only having stated falsely he had purchased the hog, but he had altered the mark "a criminal act." the case was decided against him. The jury done there duty without prejudice. Sept. 15 1866 Respectfully returned to Hope Baine. Goldsboro N.C. and attention invited to enclosed report of Major Stickney (sd) A.P.K. |
