| July 13' 1866 #129 | President US. Referred from Secy of War to know why this officer was mustered out | Washington July 12' 66. Refers case of Lt Col J E DeGress, recommended by Gov'r Fletcher, that for assignment with Genl O O Howard. States that he feels greatly interested in the person named and hopes that he may be assigned to duty as requested. | July 14. Respectfully returned. No reasons other than those for muster out of other volunteer officers are known to me. I always found Maj DeGress a gallant and able officer. I would be glad to assign this officer to duty in Texas vice Lt Col Kinsman mustered out if he should be restored O.O.H. |
