Augusta Ga. May 25, 1867.

J. W. Alvord;

Dear Sir: I have been intending to write to you every day since my return from Macon but I have been perfectly overwhelmed with business.

I reached here Saturday morning, May 4th, and found that there was a very general desire to give me a humble reception. Arrangements were made to have me speak in front of the City Hall. The mayor of the city introduced me. I was surprised at the wonderful change that had taken place since I left in December last. Then hardly a white citizen would recognize one in public; and even what few Southern friends I had did not care to walk with me on the streets.
