Dearest Mother

Father has taken ill this week with pleurisy and we are giving him every bit of care and comfort possible. Through it all, he retains his cheerful disposition. Saturday night, on his birthday, when he returned from S.F. he complained of a cold. Corny took his temperature, and since he had a fever, we immediately called in Dr. Barry. I did not write you at once, as we all felt that it was needless to alarm or worry you, and as it was Dad's wish. However, yesterday, Hermine talked to Esther, and Esther said we should write you, so I am doing so.

Dad had one severe pain early Sunday morning, but since then he has not had any severe pains. We have a nurse for him, and she is taking wonderful care of him, and Corny and I are both doing hing we can to make him comfortable and happy. And as I say, Dad is taking it very well. Hermine and Petey were down yesterday and approved of everything we were doing, and also had a long talk with the Doctor. It will probably take 4 or 5 days more before the fever breaks and the sickness starts to mend. Dad has been weak due to the strenuous diet he has been on, and it is this weakness rather than the pleurisy which we must overcome before he starts to mend.

I hate, Mother Dear, to have you worry back East alone, and want you to know that nothing will be left undone in caring for him, and that we are keeping in close touch with Hermine and Petey.
