Major J.W. Free, organized the first military company of 3 mo. volunteers for service in the Civil War. He was prominent in several important battles. Major free was a well-known lawyer in New Lexington.

General Phillip H. Sheridan, who, though born in Albany, lived all the years of his boyhood in Perry County.
