"PEOPLE CAN HARDLY DRAW ANYTHING WITHOUT BEING OF SOME USE TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS" JOHN RUSKIN 1856,
APR 16

"A Bishop... must be blameless"
I TIMOTHY III

Dear Isabel,

I thought I had every reason to be able to imagine what your Whitney Show would be like - but I was there yesterday, and it was much grander, much more impressive than I felt any exhibition, by any contemporary could possibly be.

The [[Reuters?]] interview was going ((& beginning again)) while I was there. I would have loved to make the rounds of those walls with you - and also with Farres. We both think he should have had a Nobel Prize. But he would agree with me - (I think) - that you have something better. You have the recognition only an ass would reject * - under emotions that are quiet above and beyond those who are doing the recognizing. You are conferring the honor - on the Whitney - and on all those associated with it whose work we respected - Lloyd, Mrs. Frice - and I think we may even try and recall - and include, Karl Free. We'll have time soon to discuss this, but, I want to write you what is often hard to put into words without a pen (( - until Tuesday.)) As ever // Lydia & Warren

* My friend Saroyan turned down the Pulitzer Prize - etc.
