Mr. David Smith
Bolton Landing
New York

Dear David,
I heard from Ilse that you called twice at the gallery when you were in New York, and I would like to tell you how sorry I am to have missed seeing you. You will recall that before I left for Europe, we had a discussion here in the gallery which made me feel good because you agreed with me that a closer cooperation between us both was desirable. I should have liked to continue this discussion with you. Therefore, please do let me know next time you are in New York so that we can meet-- have lunch-- or in any case have an opportunity to talk about everything.
The Museum of Modern Art called us saying they had received a piece of yours. They did not know why it was sent or any details about it, and asked us to get in touch with you. Since the piece is dated (or begun) 1949, the Museum cannot show it in their May sculpture exhibition; also, as you know, they had already selected "Sentinel II" for this particular show. Therefore, please inform us about this piece so we can tell the Museum. Can the piece be delivered here to the gallery?
Also the Whitney Museum called saying they had received the "Sentinel I". Would you please be kind enough to let us now the selling price in case we have any inquiries about it. Dear Dave, frankly I feel that, to say the least, it is embarrassing to us to be told that a David Smith sculpture has been lent to a museum completely without our knowledge; especially, since Jane had been in touch with you several times about the piece for the Whitney show.
Best from us all,
Cordially yours,
OMG:JW
