at a high rate of exchange in jacks, marbles and dolls' eyeballs. The pounding continued and accelerated. Everywhere, a smashed glitter on the pavement gave evidence of the prevailing industry and avarice, which, as June approached, reached fanatic and fantastic proportions. Ever since that time, I have felt that I have some understanding of those derelict prospectors who are happy only when shaking the pan by the summer stream or staking the claim on the rocky hill, who, oblivious of age, arthritis, respect of relatives, peace of mind, and the blue suits, are cajoled and driven by the phantom sparkle that dances between the bloodshot retina and hard-bosomed world.

The summer came. We all went away to our separate fields and beaches and forgot about each other for months, and when we came back - it was the same every year - we were all different people, with more teeth or fewer, and bigger feet and other ideas. We never spoke of Shush again and Ira and I were no longer brother and sister but rather cool acquaintances.

Thirty years have passed since then, yet to this day, when I see mica-crusted rocks glistening in the sunshine, my first feeling is a lust for possession. For an instant, I would like to be down on my haunches in Wahington Square, chewing my tasty hat elastic and pounding for riches with Ira.
