Sir:

In accordance with authority granted by the Secretary of War under the provisions of Section 3 (a) of the Act approved June 5, 1942, Public Law 580, 77th Congress, you are hereby offered engagement as Artist at $3800 per annum, plus lawful travel expenses from point of engagement in the United States to post of duty at a foreign station, and return, upon completion of engagement, to point of hire in the United States, and plus a 25% differential in salary effective upon arrival at foreign station. 

The War Department Art Advisory Committee, an advisory group appointed by the Chief of Engineers, is hereby authorized to represent the United States Government and the Engineer Department of the War Department, in outlining your duties in detail, in selecting your assignments, and in applying provisions of this agreement with respect to ownership of notes, drafts, sketches and other material produced under this contract. 

You will enter on duty in the Office of the District Engineer, U. S. Engineer Office, New York City, for a period not exceeding 90 days for the purpose of orientation and training in the specific work to be done for the United States under this engagement. Upon completion of necessary preparations and training and as soon as necessary transportation can be provided, you will proceed to an overseas theatre of operations and upon arrival you shall prepare, with all possible expediency and skill for the use of the Government, such notes, drafts, sketches, drawings and paintings as may be practicable under the circumstances. 

This agreement shall continue in effect for a period of 6 months from the date hereof subject to extension or to immediate termination by the Government should the character investigation by the Provost Marshal General prove unsatisfactory, or at any time thereafter for suit
