exercize of its faculties; it is hungry for thinking, for feeling, for real experience it is eager for new kinds of truth, new philosophical outlook; it wants contact with live minds; it wants to feel compassion; it wants to grow emotionally and intellectually; it wants to live.

Art has walked out on its ancient and honorable role of providing such experience and such outlook and such compassion to the public. (O) It has been hung by the neck until dead [[strikethrough]] by unpo [[/strikethrough]] upon its gibbet of precious principals. "Irresponsible" indeed!  The artist today walks about with a load of responsibility which would smother any art and which has smothered his-- the injunction: "be anything, but dont dare be human!"
