Artist Statement

I make art about rites of passage, of voyages and journeys, geographical, psychological, and spiritual. The work in this show spans several years and I find myself moving back and forth from making more traditional flat paintings to building and constructing images. I am always and forever inspired by events in my life, from simple replenishing trips to Joshua Tree to the more psychologically demanding experience of living in today's accelerated world.

My latest works are the Crosses. I began them by doing small pieces before last Christmas. The idea was to take a simple symbol of faith and by bending it to question how our own faith and beliefs become tested possibly less certain. As this idea evolved within me, I found the crosses taking on the personas of people close to me.

The idea that a universal symbol can elegantly articulate an individual portrait and simultaneously transcend that persona back to the universal is intriguing and powerful in the possibilities it poses concerning perceptions of our place in the world and the paths we travel.
