3-FWJ-6, NATIVITY

One of the most dynamic religious paintings by Wm. H. Johnson is his "NATIVITY". This picture of tightly organized composition knits to gather in a circular pattern that principle ideas relating to the birth of Christ. The hands of the mother and father express adoration for the Christ child which lies between them on the floor of the stable. This "NATIVITY" tends to summarize Johnson's willful involvement in primitive form. He attempts to go back and speak as a child, see as a child and be caught up by the emotional response that a child makes.

One must realize when viewing these paintings that the artist was not attempting to discard all that he knew about principles and theories of art. Johnson was attempting to combine what he knew with a direct approach to the subject which he had researched through African and European primitive art. He felt that he could best show his interest in social and historical trends through this flat primitive style. It was in this style that he was able to comment on the religious life of the people, the historical significance of the great Afro-Americans of the past, and the economic and social life of the Afro-American as a minority in the United Sates.
