General,

Having been ordered to my residence at Westport Conn. to  report by letter to the Adjutant General, and anticipating soon to be mustered out of the U.S. service, I have the honor to apply for a Civil or military position in  your Bureau. I am led to make this application, from a good opinion formed of the usefulness of the Bureau. During the time (about six months) that I have been on duty on the staff of Major General John Gibbon, as acting assistant adjutant general, it has been a large part of my duty to assist in carrying out the projects and views of the Commissioner. I would here state that I enlisted in April '61. (in 1st N.Y.), served three (3) months. On recovery from wounds received in this campaign. I re-enlisted in the 139th N.Y.
