Council Bluffs Iowa July 29th 1867.

major Genl O.O. Howard
Commissioner Bureau R.F. & A.L.
Washington D.C.

General,
I have the honor to make application for a possition in the Bureau as an Agent, or for a clerkship. If a considerable residence in the several Southern States during the war as a soldier, and a length of service as Asst. Supt. in the Bureau, of which you are chief, together with some knowledge of of the law and a hearty sympathy for the objects designed to be accomplished by the Bureau, tend to fit and qualify one for a position therein I may hope for an appointment. I served during the War in several capacities: In 1861 and 1862 as a private soldier and
non-commissioned officer in 12th Ills Cavalry; in the Army of the Potomac. In 1863 Commissioned a 1st Lieut of Colored Troops. In 1864 as recruiting officers of Colored Troops with Genl Shermans Army during the Georgia Campaign. In 1856 as Asst Com of Musters Dept of Ten. and, subsequently, in same year and part of 1866, as Asst Supt of Dist of Huntsville Alabama under Genl Fisk and then under Genl Swayne, until mustered out with my Regt. at Memphis Ten..
