dear Sir,
I take great pleasure in stating that you served in the Pennsylvania Reserve Corp while under my Command. You were a Sergeant in Company A. 1st Regt which company was selected by me for my body-guard. which offered me every opportunity I could desire for studying the character of the men composing it.
I can from my knowledge of your personal character unhesitatingly state that I consider you perfectly competent to the fill the station you seek. 
I know that your moral character is unexceptionable
