to pay it for some time. I called on said De Mott the evening prior to my leaving the city and informed him that I was going South; and said to him that I expected to return in the fall or winter - & if I did not I would send him the amount of my bill at my earliest convenience.

I would say in this connection that I had, and have money due in in this state; but have been unable to collect so as to meet the bills unavoidably contracted - and notwithstanding the course pursued relative to said bills is wholy unwarranted in facts. I feel the force of my obligations and shall meet them at the earliest moment possible. I will also state that I have received no money from the Gov. since I left Washington.

As to the statement of Jas. D. McBride I will but call your attention to the fact that his letters addressed me at Goodman and Lexington Miss in answer to letters sent from me, and which have been furnished you; brand it as false and the author as a perjurer - if said statement is sworn to as represented - more they convict him of
