Respectfully returned to Maj. Genl. Carlin Asst. Com'r State of Tenn. whose attention is invited to the following extract from my endorsement of May 30" in a communication drafted May 22d 1867, from Maj. Genl. Howard Com'r &c on the same subject.

(Extract)
"The buildings that have been used by the Orphan Asylum during the past winter are a large two story brick and a one story barrack building. The brick building contains 8 rooms and was occupied as follows: 

1st floor, one room for Library and reception room; one room for Mrs. F.E. Smith, Matron, and her little boy; one for

Dispensary, also used as a kitchen and dining room for the persons in charge of the Asylum, and one for a school room.

2d floor, one room occupied by Mrs. Canfield and her two little boys; one as a linen room, used for storing bedding, clothing &c; one for the Asst. Matron & school teacher, and one held in reserve as a Hospital Ward in cases of emergency. The Hall up stairs was used as dormitory for the orphan children. The other building contains 7 rooms and has been occupied as follows: One room each as a kitchen, dining room hospital ward, dormitory for girls, ditto for boys, a bath and wash room, and a bed room for the cook. The brick building is a comfortable one, but the barrack building is an

old affair and would require extensive repairs to make it what it should be. The repairs were not put upon it for the reason that the owners did not decide to allow us the use of the building for this reason until Feby and it was not deemed advisable to put repairs thereon until we were certain that they would accrue to our benefit. It has been the custom of those in charge of the Asylum during the inclement weather of the past winter to bring as many of the children as possible into the main building to sleep - they being distributed around [[strike]] around in [[/strike]] the various rooms occupied by the ladies in charge.
