Gen O.O. Howard
Washington City, D.C.

Dear Sir: I deem it my duty to you, and the Freedmen to send you the inclosed news paper containing the Article marked my me, written by Prof Wm Howard Day. I will say not one word here against Day. I will only say to you, that every statement he makes in the article, about me, is a base lie. You can understand what he says of you and the spirit of the article generally. Please not consider, that I send you this article for the purpose of bringing an accusation against Mr Day. I do no such thing. But I am bound now and henceforth to let you know, if I can, who your real friends are. You will please preserve this Paper for me. I want it for future use

With sentiments of profound
Esteem and respect,
Yours Truly
J.M. Langston

P.S. I also enclose two pieces from the pen of Mr Day published in his paper sometime ago. Please preserve these also for me. J.M.L.
