The Com'r desires information as to the title by which the Gov't holds the Arlington Estate.

Desires the Sub. Asst. Comr. 10th Sub Dist. Va. to call upon the Tax Collector or the Assessor, or both: of the Internal Revenue for his Dist. and ascertain if possible how the matter stands, and to give it his early attention.

Respectfully returned to Bvt. Brig. Genl. F.D. Sewall, A.A.A.G., with the information that Government holds title from the U.S. Tax Comrs.

The within named Estate was charged with $92.07/100 tax, with penalty of 50 per centrum and 10 per cent interest on amount of tax.

Was advertised to be sold by the Tax Commissioners, on the 11th of Jan'y 1864, and by order of President Lincoln was purchased by the United States, for Gov't use, under Act of Congress in 1862, Chap. 98, Entitled "An Act for the collection of Direct Taxes" &c., and as amended and approved Feb. 6th 1863, Chap 21.

Amount of purchase money $26,800 00/100.
