title of, in and to, each, and every piece or parcel of land up on which said tax has not been paid as above provided, shall thereupon become forfeited to the United States, and, upon the sale herein after provided for, shall vest in the United States or the purchasers at such sale, in fee simple free and discharged from all prior liens incumberances, right, title, and claim what soever

In pursuance of said law the tax was fixed on the Arlington Estate on the 15th of Sept 1863 and not being paid within the sixty days thereafter as required by the act became forfeited to the United States  was advertised and sold on the 11th of Jan 1864.
