Orleans and Jefferson R.B.

In this Parish there have been a great many complaints brought before the Agent, the majority of them being disagreements between employer and employee about loss of time, amount paid at different times, supplies furnished & c., But very few freedmen keep any accounts and cannot therefore, have in all cases, a very correct idea of them. One case is reported of a freedman being fatally shot by two men, supposed to be fellow laborers but there being no proof the parties arrested were discharged. He had been used by his employer as sort of a confidential spy watching parties of thievish propensities, - His family for the present will be supported by the planters. Many planters complain of their men losing a great deal of time which is probably true as they have always shown a disposition to visit cities of large towns whenever they have any opportunity. The larger portion of them however are working well and are orderly. The prospects for cotton are not very good the grass being the higher of the two and the continual rain having prevented its being weeded.
