Pointe Coupee

In this Parish many of the plantations have been overflowed and were not cultivated, the land remaining under water until it was too late to plant. Upon the high lands the Cotton - in the early portion of the month - looked very promising but since then the caterpillars have made their appearance and have in a great many instances destroyed the entire crop. It is estimated that one half of the number of the freedmen engaged for the season will be sufficient to perform the work required. Planters are daily discharging their laborers, having neither money or supplies, and the Commission Merchants refuse to make any advances - Much suffering among the poorer classes is anticipated, A great many complaints are reported non of them of a very serious nature.
