In this Parish several cases of assault and battery are reported most of which have been referred to the Civil Authorities. The freedmen appear to be doing well, although many of the planter complain that they leave their work to attend to political meetings - They have been advised to hold their meeting on Saturday afternoon as every man is now needed in the fields.

St Mary's.
A great many cases were brought before the Agent for investigation a number of them being for assault and battery all of which were referred to the Civil Authorities and have not as yet been settled- Many of the freedmen are working for a share of the crops on verbal contracts and some trouble, at the close of the season is expected. They are not generally willing to comply with the marriage law and pay little or no attention to advice given to them upon the subject. There are a great many old and indigent freedpeople living upon abandoned plantations.
