St Landry and Calcasieu.

In this Parish the cotton worm has made its appearance and cotton which in the early part of the month promised well is now being rapidly destroyed. A great deal of suffering is reported upon plantations which have been overflowed. A great many complaints have been made to the Agent of the Bureau Eleven of which were assault and battery with intent to kill such cases have been turned over to the Civil Authorities for trial. Much of the trouble has been caused by planters and freedmen having become discouraged in regard to the growing crops. Political meetings are being held and seem to cause but little excitement. One school has been re-opened during the month.

Vermillion.

No complaints of importance made Freedmen generally working well, Cotton looking poorly on account of the heavy rains. There are no schools, there not being a sufficient number of children to warrant the establishment of one.
