[[stamp]] The National Archives of the United States [[/stamp]] Asks if the services of the following named officers of the 43d US Infy. can be spared from the Bureau, the Comdg. Dist of Louisiana New Orleans Oct 19' 1867 Respectfully returned to Bvt Brig General E Whittlesey Act'g Ass't Adj & General, Bureau R.F.&A.L. Washington, D.C., with information that Lieut Garretty received a "leave of absence" July 21st 1867 and has not as yet returned. Owing to the prevalence of yellow fever throughout the State, the number of officers for duty connected with the Bureau has become so reduced that it would be detrimental to the interest of the Bureau to relieve any of the agents. Lieut Garretty's services could be dispensed with, after the yellow fever disappears, which will probably be within a month E.B. 3/199 Jos A Mower Brevet Major General U.S.A.
