The Textbook used in these schools are the National Series, mainly Mitschell's Geography is also used. These schools are all free, and supported by "the Philadelphia Friends Freedmen's Association." They were opened on the 300th day of September 1864 The Freedmen appear deeply interested in the matter of education, and their morals for the most part are good. No drunkards are to be seen among them, though the majority of them drink to some extent and nearly all of them use tobacco by smoking, chewing, or dipping, beyond all reason and at great expense.
