have bought by their scanty earnings since their Emancipation.  These lots owned by the Freedmen contain from one fourth to a half acre of land.
   here I find the Freedmen as a class industrious, frugal and thrifty.  There is one colored man here Mr William Bennett (he was never a slave however) who is said to be worth in real estate not less than six thousand dollars, and is the owner of personal property of like amount or more.
   The morals of the Freedman here too appear improving.  There is no drunkeness, as I discerned among them, many of them drink and most of them use tobacco; but I believe my labor among them will do good in this direction. As in many other sub Districts of this of this state, so in this one the Agents of the Bureau are not doing for the Freedmen Educationally what they ought to do   A very little vigorous earnest action in this particular on their part would accomplish a great and good work.
