is seventy six. It is under the management of Miss E.A. Warner and is patronized by the American Missionary Association. The children in this school are doing well.

The school for the Poor Whites of this place taught by Miss A.M. Bradley assisted by Miss Rush deserves special notice in this connection. It numbers one hundred and fifty pupils with an average attendance daily of one hundred and twenty five. The children in this school are for the most part well behaved and are making reasonable progress in their studies. They have not yet gone beyond the ordinary English Branches and, in fact, most of them are just beginning these. Much good is to come of this and kindred schools in this State.

The Brewer Orphan Asylum opened in 1866 located on Middle Sound about seven miles from this city and which has had in it one hundred and fifty orphans and destitute children of Freedmen since it was opened has connected with it an excellent school numbering fifty five children with an average daily attendance of fifty two. Forty two of these children are under fourteen years of age. The children here are kindly treated and are doing well in all respects. The persons under whose charge this Asylum is conducted are D. Monroe, Genl. Supt. Mary Mead, matron, E. L. Piper assistant and Miss Anna Kidder teacher. They are laborious and efficient.
