handsome income. The Freedmen of this State exhibits, also, an intelligent and healthful appearance ration of good morals. In proof of this I may adduce these two facts,- first, move a then than a marriage sanctioned by law is approved by them generally; and secondly the unholy and adulterous relations, in many cases, existing between white and colored women, tired by slavery, is very generally condemned by them; and a public sentiment is springing up among them, which, at no distant day, will render it very unpleasant for colored women who consent to such mode of life, to live among them Like the Freedmen in other parts of the country they are doing all in their power to build churches for themselves. In several of the large cities of the State, they own quite a number of respectable churches edifices. In several places, as Raleigh and Wilmington, they and now engaged in building several churches.
